What your practicum includes?

• 1. 10 hours of classroom observation in a Vancouver area English school.
  
• 2. 10 hours of practice teaching under the supervision of a qualified teacher.
• 3. Formal evaluations done by your sponsor teacher.
• 4. Practicum report written by your sponsor teacher.

Practicum Description

The optional twenty-hour practicum offered by ATC meets the standards for TESOL program practicums set by the Canadian ESL teacher certification body, TESL Canada, as well as standards set by both national and international ESL teaching organizations. A recognized and approved practicum must consist of 10 hours of observation of a working teacher and 10 hours of practice teaching of actual ESL students under the supervision of a qualified teacher.

The first part of the practicum, the observation, will usually be done at one of the many English schools in the Vancouver area. TESOL students who are non-native speakers of English will do the second part of the practicum, their practice teaching, at community English classes under the supervision of a qualified teacher. TESOL students who are native speakers of English may also teach at the community English classes or may, alternatively, be placed at a private English language school to complete their teaching hours.

Once TESOL trainees have competed the twenty-hour practicum, they have met the Canadian and international standards for an ESL teacher practicum.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of your practicum, you are expected to be able to:

• Gain the necessary experience and confidence to teach English in a classroom setting.
  
• Design detailed and dynamic lesson plans suitable for various levels.
  
• Have the basic tools and techniques for classroom management and dealing with unexpected situations.

Admission requirements

Completion of ATC's in-class TESOL Diploma Program.
